FASHION WEEK SS20

PARIS

As is often expected from the fashion capital of the word, Parisian runways elevated makeup to new and illustrious heights. An entire wonderland of colour was placed on skin in artistic, avant-garde ways. Monochromatic makeup saturated the face in well-edited and wearable neutral tones. And traditional black liner was reimagined with hand-drawn streaks and smudged smears that intentionally disregarded convention.

RICK OWENS

MONOCHROM-
ATIC MULBERRY

Artful placement of colour is inherently daring, but the technique can convey a more demure air when focusing on a single colour family. At Rick Owens, a berry shade was used all over the eyes and lips for a harmonious makeup effect. Makeup artist Jenny Sauce demonstrates how to play with different opacities and textures to keep monochromatic colour from looking too monotonous.

This monochromatic makeup look uses an unexpected berry colour that evokes feminine power. The shade is wearable, but it still has something to say.”

KOCHÉ

MORNING-
AFTER MAKEUP

Koché’s beauty look proves that there’s no shame in your late-night game. Smudges of black liner across eyes and stains of timeworn burgundy on lips were meant to evoke a woman dancing the evening away at a club – and owning her unkempt look. Here, makeup artist Jenny Sauce shows how to master the art of messy makeup.

This look is for the girl who doesn’t like to live perfectly. With a focus on smudged liner and smeared lips, dare I say, your makeup from last night can still look good in the morning.”

FASHION WEEK SS20

MILAN

In Milan, directional runway beauty blew open feminine tropes – each dash of liner and swipe of lipstick served with a bias-shattering edge. Red lips were ultra-matte, lashes came in pastel shades, brows were emboldened, and unforgettable embellishments of rhinestones and chromatic shadows elevated makeup to this season’s best accessory.

Moschino

THE NEXT
CAT EYE

The classic feline flick was reinvented at Moschino, where eyes were defined with black liner that was both simple and bold. In place of the expected wing, geometric strokes extended below the lower lash lines widened the gaze with a subtle subversion. Here, M·A·C Senior National Artist Gisel Calvillo interprets the look her way.

Alberta Ferretti

SUBTLE
SPLENDOUR

Gilded lids were given daytime appeal at Alberta Ferretti, where flaxen eye shadows were topped with the faintest flashes of gold. For a personal spin on this unapologetically pretty statement eye, M∙A∙C Senior National Artist Michelle Clark chooses to pair her goldenrod shadows with a clash of cool silver.

I prefer using cool-toned silver metallic against
warm-toned shadows, instead of typical gold glitter, for an unexpected but wearable eye look.”

FASHION WEEK SS20

LONDON

On the London runways, makeup statements were bright, bold and entirely DIY. Haphazard shapes and wild streaks were daubed on in saturated colours across the eyes. Lips came layered in surprising textures. When skin was the focus, it deliberately took on a quality of perfectly imperfect naïveté. Watch the biggest trends to come out of LFW right here, right now.

MATTY BOVAN

DOUBLE-
NEGATIVE LINER

At Matty Bovan, perfectly precise liner was abandoned in favour of erratic slashes of navy and slapdash spots of silver to frame the eyes. Inspired by the inventive shape, makeup artist Jaleesa Jaikaran demonstrates how to refine the unconventional two-toned look to make it not only wearable, but your own.

This architectural eye liner look plays with lots of negative space, which gives some interest and excitement to eyes beyond your typical winged liner.”

MARQUES ’ ALMEIDA

TEXTURE PLAY

Key makeup artist Terry Barber gave black lipstick unexpected ease at Marques ‘ Almeida, where he anchored the rebelliously glossy shade with a seemingly bare complexion. The effect of ultra-dimensional skin was created by deft applications of liquids, creams and powders (a technique even makeup minimalists can benefit from). For maximalists, makeup artist Jaleesa Jaikaran suggests keeping obsidian lips matte for wearability and to retain focus on the sheen-supreme skin.

This look focuses on the natural tones of skin, enhanced with textural elements. To dial it up even more, layer on a fashion-forward black lip.”

NEW YORK

The New York runways reimagined timeless beauty statements by way of technicolour, larger-than-life executions. Think: winged eye liner elongated to aerodynamic lengths and zapped in glittering neon, and bold lip colours drenched in vinyl, mirror-like reflection. Palette cleansers came by way of skin so luxuriously clear, it verged on austere. Watch the biggest trends of NYFW here first.

JEREMY SCOTT

JEREMY SCOTT

TWINKLING
TECHNICOLOUR EYES

With graphic sweeps of glittering neon painted into the inner corners of the eyes, the look at Jeremy Scott channeled Japanese animations and glam-rock icons. For an everyday iteration, M·A·C Artist Amy Ernest demonstrates how to diffuse the fluorescent colour into a sheer wash for a wearable look that maintains every ounce of attitude.

CHROMAT

CHROMAT

3D-POP
LIPS

Chromat’s sparkling cerulean lips are not for the faint of heart. Translating the rebellious spirit of the look into everyday ease, Makeup Artist Jaleesa Jaikaran chooses a highly pigmented royal blue colour glazed with glinting gloss. The result? Lips that look so 3D, they seem to bounce off the skin.

A royal blue colour is more wearable than a bright blue because the depth makes it more similar to a purple shade. This is the new berry lip.”
